Introducing Sadie

Post by Sadie Morgan »

Hi, I am Sadie's mother and am looking to find out more about her iritis. Sadie is a lovely three and half year old girl who has iritis and juvenile polyarticular idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

She was diagnosed with JIA when she was 18 months old. At three years old she was diagnosed with iritis. She did not present with normal symptoms and did not complain of any eye pain and she did not have any visible long standing symtoms. She did have a slightly red eye in july 2012, about 5 months before she was diagnosed. I took her to emergency thinking it was pink eye from daycare and was treated with antibiotic drops. The redness cleared up for a bit and came back slightly a month later and again was treated with antibiotic drops. As part of her treatment for JIA her eyes are checked on a regular basis with her opthalmologist and she was diagnosed with iritis in december 2012. She has since been treated with pred forte and homatropine 5%. The inflamation is gone. Her iritis concerns me still as she has posterior synechiae to about 40% of her iris after a month of dialation drops.

She is currently taking 10 mg methotrexate orally, naproxen, folic acid and vitamin D for treating her arthritis. She has a blood test every two months to monitor while taking the methotrexate and monitor the inflamitory markers. She sees a pediatirc rheumatologist every 4 months, a pediatric opthalmologist every 5-6 months and her GP and pedeiatrician every 6 months if all is well and ofcourse she is seen more often if there is a problem. She often has short flares while she is fighting a viris or cold. She has had a couple of treatments of joint injections to several joints to control longer flare ups and reduce inflamation.

I hope to find more information on this site regarding possible treatment for Sadie's iritis and in specific, how to get her iris un-stuck!

Sadie's mom,

Please join the following PARENT"s forum Support group at http://www.uveitis.org we have a brochure you can print out called Uveitis: a Guide for Teachers and Parents as well as a brochure on Ocular Inflammatory Disease that you can print out and give to friends and relatives, doctors etc

Methotrexate is the first DMARD drug used in treating JIA related uveitis sometimes a TNF A blocking drug such as remicade or Humira has to be added to the mix. the above site is part of the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation's online support network, there is a link from there to the parent site, http://www.uveitis.org as well as the ASK DR Foster a question forum. Dr Foster is the top Ocular Immunologist in the World I have been working with him helping people for over 14 years now and you can trust those posting to the parent's forum. I help out there too. You will have to join to post however as it helps to keep mischievious people from posting.

wishing your daughter the very best,
Mike Bartolatz
