Hello, I am Caroline Hayes and I have joined this group on behalf of my cousin, who has no e-mail facilities. She is 68 years old, has Iritis, and cataracts which she has been told are inoperable. She also has a history of glaucoma, and is being treated at the Salisbury Hospital, Wiltshire, UK. I want to find out whether it is worth her getting a second opinion, and if so, can anyone recommend the best specialist in the UK for this?

yes it might be beneficial to see Professor William Ayliffe in London. he is the best ocular immunologist in the UK in my lay opinion. his contact information can be found at http://www.uveitis.org in the PATIENT information section of the site, he does take private patients as well as NHS. I've never heard of cataracts not being operable. it might be that she means not operable at this time because they are not 'ripe' or not operable because there is too much inflammation going on at this time but I believe all cataracts can be removed. she may not be a candidate for intra ocular lenses but then she could use contacts and glasses after surgery. what is the cause of the iritis? does she have steroid induced glaucoma?
