Son, 11 just diagnosed with iritis due to cornea problem

Post by rightaway »

Long story short, my son, 11 was just diagnosed with iritis, we went to Adkumen (St. Louis) as he was listed on the iritis suggested Dr. list. He took a look and said the iritis was the secondary problem to the main issue that was his cornea. He had inflammation in the blood vessels, cornea and iris. He had a milky hazy spot on the cornea, also. He had a distinct red ring around the iris. Dr. Adkumen did not want to diagnose anything as he wanted a cornea specialist to look at him as he said that was the source. They had one in the office (Dr. Council) and he said that Max has issues (cant remember what term he used, you know, mom shock was setting in) in his cornea that he believes are from an auto immune disease. He said this is extremely rare to have a cornea problem such as his (no name was given, i am so mad I didn't ask) Not really sure he would have given it a name if I asked until Max sees the rheumatologist. He also said it could just be a virus so he is treating him with viral medication for 30 days along with the prednisone drops 6x's a day. Oh, and his vision was perfect.

Max has had knee pains since 2 yrs old, has Von Willebrands type 1 (bleeding disorder, very mild), Leidens Factor V (clotting disorder, again not a big deal now that we know), very low IgA but does produce some now that he is older (minor immune deficiency that affects mucous membranes, again not a big deal at all). He was a very rashy kid and still can be, ate gluten free (extremely strict as they had diagnosed him with Aspergers at 3) the diet totally affected his life in a good way, he is in normal school and doing awesome, no IEP at all no teachers can detect his sometimes quirky nature. We also know he carries the main gene for Celiac Disease, but he cannot have the blood test for it as he does not produce enough IGA. He shows no symptoms, he used to have problems that is why they tested him for the gene. We gradually took him off the diet 2 years ago and he seems to be doing great. I know this sounds funny but honestly, he is really quite a healthy kid day to day now that he is older.

If anyone has advice on anything especially if anyone is in St. Louis what do they think of their rheumatologist, we were set up with an appointment with Reema Syed, M.D. she is pediatric only. I checked with his hematologist and he felt this was a good choice they had made. Anyway, any advice on anything we will take. Does anyone ever have good news and find out it is not Auto Immune?

thanks for any advice,
Dina

Dina,
Please click on this link, http://www.uosg.org join the site and then post to the PARENT"S FORUM

I've sent parent that comes to this site to the above parent's forum. Uveitis is rare and is especially rare in kids. in order to get parents together in enough members to do any good, I send people to the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation website online support group to interact.
I volunteer there as well as at this site.

I hope this helps.
