Sorry for my Absence

Post by mtbargeman »

Hi, All.

I apologise for having been so absent from the board. I broke a tooth, which was half-covered with a gum boil ( don't you LOVE Sjogren's?). Monday, I went to the eye guy, who installed permanent punctal plugs. The right one had to be larger than the left, and my muscles that are visible in the corner of the eye have been painful due to a little scratch on there from the placement. It happens. Yesterday, I lost two molars on the left side of my mouth. No one tells you that it hurts while they are being removed. The first came out fine, the second came out in four pieces. The boil was lanced, I was sewn up inside the gaping hole left by the procedure, as well as the outside of the gum. I have TMJ- my jaws really hurt today, as well as the pain from the double extraction. So I haven't been anywhere on the net for a few days. I haven't been past the couch, actually. It's only Wendesday- I'm afraid to ask what else is going to happen this week.

I want to let folks here know that if they need a dentist and cannot afford one, to call their local Health Department. SOme places now have mobile dental clinics to take care of adults who need help with dental care. They work on a sliding fee scale, according to income. For a double extraction as difficult as mine was, it is 350 dollars at the regular dentist my parents see. At the HEalth Department's rolling clinic that I saw, I was responsible for 25 percent of the fee. I paid 45 dollars to have my bad teeth removed. The full fee would only have been 108 dollars. That included X-Rays. Somehow, I don't believe the math was correct on that, but it might mean a refund of overpayment, or even a cleaning or a filling, so I can save the rest of my teeth. I am unsure of what Sjogren's will do to the rest of my teeth, but the dentist said that was part of the reason I lost them. Perhaps it goes along with my Uveitis?

Anyhow, if you don't ask, you don't get, so check your local Health Dept., and see if they have or know of a program in your area for folks who need dental care.

Good Luck and Happy Smiling,

Mary

Mary,
I'm so sorry to learn of your dental problems and hope that the infection goes away for good. did they give you antibiotics to keep it quiet?
I LOVE my punctal plugs. I can actually sleep through the night now without need for gel lubricating eyedrops.
are you using saliva substitute during the day. evoxac is one thing. sugar free hard candies help get fluid flowing too.
Tom's toothpaste helps too. any suggestion of using Restasis (topical cyclosporine) to help with the lacrimal gland inflammation related to Sjogren's syndrome?
have you been tested for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus which could explain all of your condtions?
sjgoren's and SLE share markers and can be seen together.
Kidney disease is a complication of SLE and so is hearing involvement. sometimes anticardiolipin antibodies, Smith antibodies and amyloidosis can occur resulting if vascular disease.

Wish you the very best my friend,
mike

Hi, Mike-

I use Restasis, and I use Lotemax in the Spring to keep the inflammation at bay. The early pollen really gets me and makes my eys really itchy. The doc said use the Lotemax only as needed, so I only use it once or twice a day when certain pollens and mold spores are high. But I use Restasis twice every day. It is beginning to be more soothing to my eyes, now that I have the plugs and the corneas are mostly healed. They gave me 500 mg of Amoxicillin 3 times a day til its gone ( I don't know how many more days I have left.) Today it feels a lot better. It will be even better once I finally get this awful taste out of my mouth. That will leave with the infection and the healing of the gums, I am sure.

I met a nice lady while I was waiting for the dentist. She was a receptionist, but her daughter is studying neuroscience at MCV. She had JRA. A couple months ago, she busted out with a nasty case of Iritis. I told the receptionist to make sure to give her the website- Iritis.org, and that I was a Moderator here. I explained that not having a proper specialist in OID's would cause blindness, and not to let her daughter just use steroids. I explained why I am blind, and she said she would tell her daughter. I hope she at least lurks and looks at the specialist list here, even if she doesn't join. You really never know who you are going to meet.

The dentist looked at my mouth and said I had Sjogren's- which I already knew, since my old Rhuemy had diagnosed it a couple years ago. Still unsure if it is primary, or if it is a result of my RA. I had afterburn from combining clove powder, aspirin and teabags and laying it against my teeth to get me thru the nite- kids had school the next day, and I refused to ruin it for something non-life-threatening. So to do a lip biopsy, they'd have had to use the other side. I was already in pain, so I declined. I also learned that rinsing with peroxide, even watered down because you can't afford the dentist, will eat up your teeth and gums. Not something I did all the time, just once in a while. (every 6 mos., in place of a cleaning) Also, brushing with baking soda makes for whiter teeth and fresher breath, but it destroys the enamel on your teeth. Not good. I'd always been told these were good things to do by OTHER DENTISTS. Of course, I haven't been in years, so maybe it is a fairly new thing. BE careful with your teeth, people. This stinks on ice!

I've been tested for everything under the sun, including STD's. Nothing shows up, even if I go off my meds for a week or so before the tests. Maybe next year, something will show.

Take Care,

Mary

With symptoms of sjogren's syndrome and what happened with your eyes, make sure they repeatedly test you for Systemic lupus erythematosus and sjogren's sydnrome. Sarcoidosis can also cause severe dry eyes and dry mouth and can also cause pars planitis, tinitis, inner ear disease, CNS disease, heart, lung, kidney and vascular disease. make sure they test for ACE for sarcoidosis along with the SSA (anti RO52) and SSB (Anti LA) for sjogren's and SLE. clotting factors (anti SM specific for SLE) should be tested for annually too. I've know people who had symptoms for thirty years before the markers have shown up. one ended up with Sarcoidosis AND SLE with secondary Sjogren's and Rheumatiod arthritis. she is a nurse in Canada.

HI, Mike.

I get tested and re-tested every year. I have been busy as a one-armed paper hanger. I am looking for work that pays regularly, so I can write on the side until I can get my writing going and working for me. I am having trouble explaining the gaps in my employment history on apps, and why I haven't worked in so long. Also have the added worry of ensuring that an employer isn't scared off hiring because of my disability. All emeployers are required to hang out the little sign that says they will not discriminate on the basis of...(put things they do so discriminate over here in this blank...) very few actually do not discriminate. At least, in my personal experience, they do this. I COULD be wrong, but it sure does walk like a duck...

So I am in the nerve-wracking position of trying to explain a huge gap in employment history, as well as trying to convince someone to take a chance on me. And as usual, since I am face to face with the people, rather than being able to write a civilized rebuff to their protests, I don't know what to say or do.

On the upside, I was able to get outside with my Dad and Mom and my kids this weekend. We just went picking poke greens. The kids had a blast. SO did I, watching the kids alongside my Dad, they way we used to be when we were kids, picking greens. Daddy was proud to know that Chris still remebered from last year how to find the poke greens. Amanda learned to pick them, and I re-learned. I got my Dad to ID the greens properly for me, then I smelled the handful I picked. After that, I just smelled everything. As long as it smelled the same, it was in. If it smelled the least bit different, it was out. I kept the "out" pile to show later. Dad said I was right every time. My kids can't even smell greens and things when we pick them. I guess I've learned to use my nose better than others. It has saved me more than twice, though. SO if any of yall see a crazy lady in the grocery store who smells everything before she'll buy it, you know it's me...

I suppose I will figure something out at some point or another and get everything situated the way I want it.

Good Luck, EVerybody

Mary,
call your state department of Vocational Rehabilitation and ask them with help finding a job. there is a lot of federal money for employers to get to hire disabled. you would qualify for their help and the department has lists of them to look through so that you aren't applying to someone unwilling to hire someone like you. you won't become disgruntled either.

I have no Idea what 'green's are that you write about. for 'wild greens' the only one I have is Dandelion and I POISION them!

wish you the best,
Mike

Mike-

I am working with a Vocational Rehab counselor. The rules say that I have to be active in finding employment, too. That is fine. I just don't know what to say when I am asked the inevitable questions.

Have you ever seen poke berries? They are a long, tall plant with green leaves, a purple-red stalk, and lots of dark purple berries. The berries are not good to eat. They make great ink. But, that same plant, in early spring, and up to early summer, if picked in shade, is poke greens. They are good to eat. They are the only greens other than dandelion that I can safely eat without fear of kidney stones. All other types, and even LETTUCE (!) will make me sick. I avoid kidney stones like the plague. ( Mostly because I think the plague would hurt less. Because I'd actually die that time, yes, it would hurt less. ) :P Soon, there will be berries to pick and make jelly from, fox grapes to pick and eat, another type of wild grape we found here that is some kind of good. It looks like a dark-colored globe grape, but it is not as sweet. It is rather sour and has a bit of bite to it, but it is sweet at the same time. It's weird. I'd have to show you, but that won't come til September. While we were picking greens, we also found a few new berry brambles. Mmmm. Berries... How is a person supposed to eat like a King or Queen, when they can't even find the good stuff? I feel sorry for my city-slicker cousins. Not enough to show them how to find all the goodies- they should have paid better attention when they had the chance. Suckers.

Anyhow. When you hear me talk about getting chiggers while grocery shopping, you know I've been out again.

Have FUN- that's why we're here.

Mary,
have you had your SERUM CALCIUM levels checked? often they can be VERY HIGH in Sacroidosis patients. this can make you very ill. did you test positive for ACE? are your vitamin D3 levels high? sarcoidosis is found in about 16% of pars planitis patients, then MS. Lesions on the brain with vascular disease, arthritis etc. Sacroidosis can attack the inner ear, partotid glands, lacrimal gland and cause uveitis. this is called Heerfordt's syndrome.
an elevated ACE can be related to Glycogen Storage disease with muscle pain, cramping, fasciculations etc. McCardle's disesase has 10 different types affecting various organs of the body.

I don't recall seeing anything like that but they may be present here in Washington State. just about anything will grow here, many tropical plants have a tough time though. Cacti of various types do very well even though we get about 39 inches of rain a year.

Take care,
mike

Hey, Mike

I test negative or normal for everything you mention. My kidney stones seem to be related to certain types of salt, including table salt. No Hungry Man dinners for me. $uck$- I like th weird chicken and mashed potatoes...

I don't understand why cactus does well there. Too cold for the tropicals. I heard there was a petrified forest there in WA. IS that so? Have you seen it? I'm DYING to see it...

yes there is a Gingko petrified forest in Eastern Washington and I have seen it on several occasions. mostly petrified stumps buried in Volcanic Ash but there are logs too. this is high desert country and VERY hot during the summer. lots of sage brush, snakes etc

I try to avoid TV dinners if at all possible. too much salt in most prepared frozen meals for my high blood pressure to handle.

take care,
Mike
