wearing contacts

Post by ssambell »

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with iritis (3/5/04) for the first time. I thought it was just pink-eye I had caught from my kids. Glad I went in for the dignosis. I have been wearing contacts for years, and of course now I have to wear my glasses. Do you think it's safe to go back to wearing contacts once the inflammaiton is gone? Is the lasik treatments an option anymore for those of us who've had iritis?
I , of course don't know if this is a one-time thing or if it will recur, I'm otherwise in perfect health, 41 years old.
Thanks

for the contacts since you have already been wearing them I wouldn't see it being a problem. I never wore contacts and tried for the first time and it didn't work for me. I would imagine it is different with every person.

As for Lasik I have always been told it isn't a good idea. I would wait and see if your iritis is recurring before you try something like that.

iritis and contacts

You can instill the eyedrops and wait about 15 to 20minutes before putting the contacts in. If your eyes are dry you might want to add a lubricating drop, preferably without preservatives as preservatives often cause itchiness for many of us. I personally cannot wear contacts as I have very dry eyes.

Lasik surgery is trauma to the eye and can often cause a flare of uveitis. I would never consider Lasik for myself

these are topics that you should direct to your doctor as each of us is different.

Often uveitis related to an autoimmune disease process starts in WOMEN in their mid 30's or older. If you have joint pain, back pain, or any form of Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, unexplained GI complaints, rashes etc ask for a consultation with a rhuematologist. If you have any neurological stuff going on as to be seen by a neurologist.

We recommend that if you have chronic or recurrent uveitis to get an evalulation by an Uveitis specialist or Ocular immunologist. You might want to click on the Link to the GLOSSARY available at Harvard University and MEEI to familiarize yourself with terms used by an Opthalmologist.

wish you the best,
Mike
