Methotrexate

Post by CaliGirl »

Hi!

Has anybody been put on Methotrexate??? My rheumatologist suggested in for me because I have chronic iritis. Between he and my ophthalmologist, I've had all kinds of tests but none of them have shown that I have any kind of autoimmune disease. I'm a little nervous about starting this new med because I understand it lowers your immune system. I'm an elementary school teacher and kids catch colds all the time which usually turns into bronchitis for me.

I'm seeing an iritis specialist this week for a second opinion, but I thought I'd put it out their to my fellow sufferers!

Thanks in advance for any input you may have!

did they try NSAIDs first to see if they could break the recurrent cycle of iritis that you have? they would have a lesser impact on infections.

with your recurrent lung involvement have they tested you for sarcoidosis or for systemic sclerosis? both have lung involvement and present with uveitis. is your uveitis granulomatus? I can't recall. who are you seeing in California?

methtorexate is fequently used to retrain the immune system to stop attacking the eyes. it works very well in most individuals but it does have some pretty nasty side effects of nausea and tiredness. make sure you take it on a friday so that you can have the weekend to recover. take folic acid to replace that depleted by the MTX about 11 hours after taking the MTX. you will have to commit to 2 years of therapy whatever route you take as it takes that long to retrain the immune system to stop making the cells responsible for inflammation.

wish you the best,
Mike
