Bad news today

Post by Sarahb »

My daughter is 14 years old and was diagnosed with iritis a few years ago. At that time she was treated quickly & briefly with complete remission. Almost 2 yrs ago she had a flare and was started on immediate treatment with no remission since. Until today she was taking durezoil 3 times a day and a drop to lower her pressure twice a day. A week ago her eye started getting red again and she was complaining of blur rinses at times. Due to Easter holiday And doctors being on vacation I was not able to get her into a doctor until today. She saw a different doctor in the same group and he informed us she is getting a cataract. He also said he was sending us for additional blood work to rule out autoimmune diseases again. And that she was going to have to be placed on an immunosuppressant med. he took us off durezoil and placed her on ped forte every hour. My question is.... Is this normal? Are cataracts in someone so young with this normal? I am scared to death she will lose her eyesight in her lt eye. She already wears hearing aids and reads lips to help her know what you are saying. I am so confused and want to make sure this is normal treatment for iritis.

I am saddened by your child's hearing loss and her uveitis. has she been tested for Cogan's syndrome which involves hearing loss and uveitis?
other conditions can also present with hearing loss and uveitis such as Sarcoidosis.

the doctor is correct to get her off the druezol and onto predforte. druezol is not suggested to be used for more than just a a couple of weeks because of the risk for glaucoma and cataract formation. all steroids have this as a potential risk and when one keeps getting uveitis or if an autoimmune disease or inflammatory disease process is involved, systemic treatment is done. often they will start out with Methotrexate to see if this will get the patient to 'off all steroids without inflammation'. the goal is to get one off of steroids as quickly as possible. this can take up to six months to achieve however so please be patient.
a website that has an excellent Parent's forum is affiliated with the Ocular immunology and uveitis Foundation here in the USA. http://www.uosg.org you can also interact with Dr. C. Stephen Foster the top uveitis expert in the World through http://www.uveitis.org there is a specialist list available in the patient information section of the site too. I also moderate forums for the Foundation.

hope to see you over there,
my best,
