Iritis Doc needed @Nice, France

Post by Cushing2 »

Hi Mike et al,
Every few months/years when my eye(s) flare up I am drawn back to your forum...I am so grateful that you are still keeping up the fight. Very impressive.

To my question: I need to find an ophthalmologist in the Cote d'Azur area of France (@Antibes, Nice, Cannes) as I am here with my family for the school year and my left eye is starting to act up. After 20 years of dealing with this recurrent scourge I often know I have iritis before even a good Doc with a slit lamp can detect cells. I know my "rhythm" and how to self medicate, but I need the weekly reading of IOP and cells to help direct my actions. I checked out Dr Fosters list of specialists but none are listed in my area.

As a note/reminder, a number of years ago I did visit Dr. F when he was still affiliated with Mass Eye & Ear. He had wanted me to go on long term daily Vioxx and I am glad I didn't. (This was before the link between Vioxx and cardiac problems was established). With a history of heart trouble on my paternal side it may have been the end of me.

Again, thanks for all you do for the world community dealing with iritis/uveitis.

PS - Tried to login under my id of Cushing but couldn't get it to work so now I am Cushing2.

I'm sorry I know of no one other than the specialists listed at Dr Foster's site.

our site has been hacked several times over the past ten years so we have lost databases and had to rebuild from scratch a couple of times so that is probably why you couldn't gain access and is why we now require membership to post rather than being an open forum which I would have preferred to membership requirements.

all drugs have risk associated with them. corticosteroids required to quell inflammation will NEVER be able to get one to remission from recurrent uveitis so one has to weigh side effect risks in order to get to off all steroids without inflammation. should this remain as a chronic situation you might consider moving on to Methotrexate alone or in combination with class of drug to try to treat the autoimmune nature of your uveitis before the chronic use of steroids causes mischief.

please consider seeing one of the specialists on the list. any opthalmologist or optometrist can do slit lamp exam and get pressure readings for you to make sure that glaucoma isn't developing with the corticosteroid use or from cells blocking the angles. a retina specialist or a cornea specialst could do steroid injections if required to quell the inflammation if it becomes chronic, someone who has done allot of cataract surgery is good with a needle if you can't see an Ocular immunologist.

I do this online support work to prevent people from ending up like me from only steroid treament which as cost me permanent vision loss. I will do my online support work for as long as I am able but I am getting pretty old now so no guarantees as to how long this will be.

Wishing you the very best,
Mike Bartolatz
