Thank God I found this forum

Post by sueyan »

Hello, my name is yan and I'm from Malaysia.

I was diagnosed to be suffering from iritis for 6 years now. Initially it occurs in an interval of 4 months or sometimes lesser. It is now more frequent. I will be on pred forte drops when the inflammation set in like 4 or 6 times a day and tapers down to twice or once daily. Once the inflammation clears and I stopped the drops, it will reoccur during my next visit to the Dr. What makes it worse is that my pressure will shoot up and that's another worrying part. Without the drops my inflammation persist but with the drops, my pressure increased.

To control my pressure, I'm on travatan, azopt & timoptol drops. During this latest round of inflammation, the pressure went sky rocketing and I had to take oral medication ie diamox tablet. This time, my ophthalmologist is suggesting surgical procedure to control the pressure.

I am really hesitant about the surgery but I wonder if I have any other choices?

I was really worried about my condition. Luckily my curiosity got the better of me and I ended up finding out more about iritis on the net and found this forum. It really sooth my troubled mind when I read what everyone had to share here.

Welcome to the group!
is your iritis in only one eye? do you have allot of adhesions (synechiae) with the eye. if so it might be caused by the herpes sx virus. pressure goes sky high.
if not, have you been tested for things like the HLA B27 gene found in uveitis patients?
does anyone in your immediate family have an autoimmune disease such as Vogt Koyanagi Harada's disease, Behcet's disease, spinal multiple sclerosis with optic neuritis (now called neromyelitis optica)?
do you have arthritis or psoriasis or Gastro intestinal/irritable bowel disease?
if you answered yes to the first question, then anti viral meds such as valacyclovir would be used to stop the viral infection before it causes allot of problems.
a steroid sparing approach through trial of a Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drug (NSAID) added to the steroids might be beneficial in controlling the uveitis if it is related to the HLA B27 gene. here in the USA Celebrex is the drug of choice, then Dolobid or Naprosyn.
If an autoimmune disease is present then chemotherapeutic immunomodulation is suggested though DMARD, disease Modifying anti rheumatic drugs, such as Methotrexate, Cellcept, Imuran etc are used to retrain the immune system to stop attacking your various systems to include the eyes. other classes of meds can be added to the mix at the direction of a Rheumatologist.
the closest Ocular immunolgist in in the Philipenes, DR Rouke. the next closest would be in Thailand or Japan. contact informaton can be found at http://www.uveitis.org in the PATIENT information section of the site on the INTERNATIONAL specialist list.
