Not a complete flare up???

Post by ClarisseW »

My latest flare up of iriitis started in May with my general sypmtoms of feeling tender /bruising around my eye, and with a slight senstitivty to light and slight soreness. I immediatley went into the opth who could barely seen anyone whiteblood cells floating around, but knew I had reaccuring iriitis and had to me to get on steriod drops to get it under control before it really flared up. So i went on drops and slowly weaned off of them per his orders.. but noticed as I came off the last few days of one drop a day i felt that soreness return to my surrounding eye, and has stayed there since for last few weeks, but has not amounted to anything more then a soreness around my eye, and slight sun sensitivty.... anythoughts if anyone has had this happen to them or what I should do??? Go back in??
Thanx so much for taking the time to read this

I'd see a specialist as you seem chronic. How much steroid do u take? My eyes don't get sore until I have a ton of white blood cells.
The general rule is zero tolerance for any cells unless steroids cause glaucoma. My first symptom is tiny bit of red in eye. You likely should have resumed the drops and immediately went back to doctor. I take hourly drops and it takes at least two weeks to beat down the inflammation
And then it's 4 yrs of remission. You seem to have mild iritis. Otoh, it's possible you had no cells in may and doc was being cautious.

Read your intro. Sounds like you are hla b27 positive.
90% of the time it stays in one eye. You say u needed oral steroids in one episode. Suggests your episodes are intense. Not sure why you did not go back to doc since may? Putting you on one drop per day with no follow up for months for new episode? Not making sense.

Thank you for your thougths..I probably should have put a little more info in.. the opth told me he could barley see one or two white blood cells floating around, and to be cautious and since I have reaccuring iritis to do the drops. I started at four drops a day, and then over a two week period tapered down to none. ( 4 for 4 day, 3 for 4, etc)
I guess I didnt know there were iritis specialists other then a opth.. I guess where would I look into that?
I have had one episode where it took an long time for my eye to settle down, and finaly had to do oral. I have been pregnant for three of my flare ups and taking something oral has not been an option and was able to treat via drops.
I didnt go back in or had a follow up, due to it being a minor flare up that never really amounted to much besides soreness, and have had other physical problems that took piroity over my slightly sore eye, and now I am trying to just figure out if I should go back or what to do...

That is not very much steroid. I guess you respond well to steroids. I need hourly drops of pred forte even when I catch the inflammation early. It was extremely important that you went back to doc to confirm that you were free of inflammation. I am surprised that you are able to detect such low level inflammation but some people can.
You certainly must go back especially since you have symptoms. It could have been a big attack which was extinguished because you caught it so early. A few cells that refuse to go away is not very toxic in short term but most docs will treat it with steroids. It's also possible that few cells make a new attack more likely.
Some will treat it with nsaids. Forget I mentioned chronicity. See your opthomologist to see what is going on. If it takes months to get rid of lingering trace cells, you might want to see specialist. It's possible a specialist might use less steroid. Specialists are opthomologists who have taken extra training. For clarity, lack of pain or a few cells does not mean you don't need an eye doctor.
